Taylor was born at 4:07 on September 10th 2010. She weighed 7lbs. 10oz. and was 19 inches long. But that's just the end of the story. Here's the beginning:
We arrived at the Hospital at 7:30am on the 9th and fully expected to be in the recovery room by lunch time. The nurses started Alli on pitocin and things started to progress well. Just before 10am her water broke on its own (a new experience for her - She had to have her water broken for both Chris and Sammy), and we figured that we were on the home stretch. We were wrong!
The drugs were working, and the epidural was great - but Alli did not dialate as fast as she had before. By dinner time she was still 80% efaced and dilated to only a 5. So we continued to wait.
And wait . . . .
Nurses changed, a few friends dropped by, and Nanna brought the kids by to say hi! Chris and Sammy were faascinated by the catheter - they watched it dump urine into the bag for nearly 15 minutes!
And we wait . . . .
The Doctor arrived to check her around 10, the exam found that she had not changed much (dilated to a 7). Alli was in good spirits, and the baby was doing fine.
Around midnight the epidural ran out of juice, and Alli had 30 minutes or so of pain until the new bag of medicine kicked in.
By this time she was exhausted and hungry. She had not eaten since the night before.
Around 1:30am (on the 10th) the Doctor examined her and announced that the pushing would begin in earnest around 2am - so Alli (and I) tried to get some rest. At 2 she started to push. At 2:30 she was still pushing with reasonable results. At 3am she was truly tired, but continued to push. At 3:30 the Doctor decided that was enough and suggested that (in his opinion) the child was getting caught in the birth canal, and that we needed to change that game plan. He counseled us to have a C-section (which we had been prepping for mentally since around 10pm). Things went fast after that.
By 3:45 Alli was in the O.R. and prepped for the procedure. The surgery went smooth.
When they got Taylor to the nurses station we saw a small cut (really a scratch) on her nose - we figured that she was just getting caught in the birth canal.
it is now 5:30, Alli is nursing our little lady. Taylor is doing well, and is ready for a bath and some sleep. Alli too. Me three (although I've been mostly a spectator through all of this)
Allison is remarkable - she has not complained. You can tell that she is tired, but is still showing the love, care, and patience that we love so much about her.
We would love to have visitors. Please call or text before you come - just to make sure that the timing is right.
Alli and I would like to express our gratitude for all of the well wishes, thoughts and prayers in our behalf. We feel very blessed to have the support of such great friends and family.
